Which SF Bay Area dentists are private equity backed?

The Bay Area has relatively few chain-affiliated dental offices. We checked every dental practice in the nine Bay Area counties against our list of dental groups.

4,603 dental office addresses checked. 127 (3%) are affiliated with a PE-backed or formerly PE-backed, now lender-controlled group. Another 32 belong to corporate-owned groups, owned by companies that aren’t PE funds. 5 offices whose owner we couldn’t confirm carry no label.

Labeled practices

Every practice we tied to a group. Practices not listed have no known PE ties. The counts above are by office address; this list is by practice, so a few offices with more than one practice record appear twice.

Coverage limits

• About half the addresses come from dentists registered only under their personal NPI. Sole practitioners often never get an organization NPI. Many of these records haven’t been updated in years, some look like home addresses, and a few are hospitals, schools or clinics. They inflate the total, so the true shares are somewhat higher.
• A few group websites block automated checks, so some of their offices may be missing.
• One group’s offices were sold to a buyer we couldn’t confirm; they carry no label until we can.
• One large group’s list comes from its partnership announcements since 2022; older partners may be missing.
• Where the evidence tying a practice to a group is thin or old, we show it as “Not confirmed” and link the source instead of a label.
• Counts here are by office address. “No known PE ties” means we found none, not that we proved there are none.
